Late Triassic, 237 to 201 million years old.
Postosuchus was a massive rauisuchid archosaur that roamed North America during the Late Triassic period (approximately 237–201 million years ago). As one of the largest predators of its time, Postosuchus measured 4 to 5 meters long and had a robust body, muscular limbs, and a long tail, designed for speed, balance, and agility while hunting.
Its skull was equipped with large, serrated teeth, perfectly adapted for tearing into prey, highlighting its carnivorous diet. Anatomical features show similarities to both crocodilians and dinosaurs, marking Postosuchus as a key early archosaur and an important species for understanding rauisuchid evolution.
Fossil discoveries indicate that Postosuchus was a dominant predator in the ecosystems of Pangaea, preying on smaller reptiles and early mammals. Its presence reveals the diversity and complexity of Late Triassic terrestrial environments and the ecological roles of apex predators before the rise of dinosaurs.
