Late Triassic, 237 to 201 million years old.

Postosuchus is an extinct genus of rauisuchid archosaur that lived during the Late Triassic, about 237 to 201 million years ago. Rauisuchids were large, carnivorous reptiles within the archosaur group, which also includes crocodilians and dinosaurs. As one of the largest predators of its era, Postosuchus measured approximately 4 to 5 meters and had powerful jaws with sharp teeth.

It featured a sturdy body, strong limbs, and a long tail, indicating it was a swift and agile hunter capable of pursuing prey. Its skull was equipped with large, serrated teeth for tearing flesh, suggesting a carnivorous diet. The anatomy shows similarities to both crocodilians and dinosaurs, marking it as an early archosaur lineage member.

Fossils have been discovered in North America, specifically in areas that were part of the supercontinent Pangaea during the Late Triassic. These findings enhance our understanding of rauisuchid evolution and their ecological role during this period. Postosuchus likely served as a top predator, hunting smaller reptiles and early mammals.
