Late Triassic, 237 to 201 million years old.

This specimen represents Postosuchus, a rauisuchid archosaur from the Late Triassic period (237-201 million years ago). As an apex predator of its time, this genus achieved lengths of 4 to 5 meters and possessed formidable dentition adapted for carnivory. Rauisuchids occupied a significant ecological niche within Archosauria, the clade that encompasses modern crocodilians and extinct dinosaurs. This fossil tooth from New Mexico's Redonda Formation provides direct evidence of the predatory capabilities that made Postosuchus one of the dominant reptilian carnivores of the Mesozoic's earliest period.

Postosuchus possessed a robust skeletal framework with powerful limbs and an elongated tail that facilitated rapid locomotion and predatory pursuit. Its cranial structure housed large, serrated dentition optimized for flesh consumption, reflecting its role as a specialized carnivore. Anatomically, this rauisuchid exhibited characteristics bridging crocodilian and dinosaurian morphologies, positioning it as a basal member of the Archosauria clade. This fossil tooth from the Redonda Formation exemplifies the sophisticated predatory adaptations that enabled Postosuchus to dominate its Late Triassic ecosystem.

Fossils have been discovered in North America, specifically in areas that were part of the supercontinent Pangaea during the Late Triassic. These findings enhance our understanding of rauisuchid evolution and their ecological role during this period. Postosuchus likely served as a top predator, hunting smaller reptiles and early mammals.
