Corythosaurus is a genus of hadrosaurid, or "duck-billed," dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous Period, roughly 80 to 74 million years ago. This era falls within the Campanian stage of the Cretaceous in the Mesozoic Era. It possessed hundreds of small, interlocking teeth at the back of its jaw, suited for crushing and grinding plant material. The bony crest atop its head housed its nasal passages and may have functioned as a sound-producing device. The dinosaur had a long, heavy tail and likely weighed between three and five tons. The earliest fossil of Corythosaurus was found in the Judith River Formation, which stretches from Alberta, Canada, to Montana, USA, and it was first described in 1914.
