Carcharodontosaurus was a massive carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived during the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100–94 million years ago, in Northern Africa. A member of the carcharodontosaurid family, it ranked among the largest predatory dinosaurs known, rivaling Tyrannotitan and Sauroniops, and slightly smaller than Giganotosaurus.
This formidable predator reached lengths of up to 12 meters, stood around 3.5 meters tall at the hips, and weighed nearly 7 tonnes. Unlike Tyrannosaurus rex, Carcharodontosaurus had longer, muscular forelimbs, each bearing three powerful claws used to grasp and restrain prey. Its massive skull housed over 60 razor-sharp, blade-like teeth, some measuring up to 20 centimeters, designed for slicing flesh with extreme efficiency.
As an apex predator, Carcharodontosaurus dominated its ecosystem, preying on large herbivorous dinosaurs such as juvenile sauropods and ornithopods. Its size, cutting dentition, and hunting adaptations make it one of the most iconic large African theropod dinosaurs ever discovered.
