Late Cretaceous through to the Eocene, 100 million to 50 million years ago

Known as the Saber-toothed herring, Enchodus is thought to be more closely related to salmon. Its teeth were specially adapted for gripping small, slippery animals such as fish and squid, positioned in a wide-opening mouth. These traits suggest that while the teeth effectively captured prey, they were not designed to tear off small pieces of flesh. After impaling its prey, Enchodus likely employed quick, repeated jaw movements to maneuver and consume its catch.
