Late Cretaceous through to the Eocene, 100 million to 50 million years ago

Commonly called the Saber-toothed herring, Enchodus is closely related to salmon. Its sharp teeth are perfectly adapted for seizing small, slippery prey like fish and squid, positioned within a wide-opening mouth. These features indicate that while the teeth were excellent for capturing prey, they were not suited for tearing off smaller pieces of flesh. Instead, after impaling its prey, Enchodus likely employed swift, repeated jaw movements to manipulate and efficiently handle its catch—showcasing a remarkable feeding technique from the Cretaceous age.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are commonly visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
