Plesiosaur Zarafasaura

Zarafasaura Oceanis, a member of the Elasmosauridae family, is one of the most intriguing marine reptiles of the Late Cretaceous. Its name combines Zarafa (“giraffe”) and Saurus (“lizard”), while the species name means “daughter of the sea.” First described in 2011 by Dr. Peggy Vincent from fossils found in Morocco, Zarafasaura reached about 23 feet (7 meters) in length and was a formidable carnivorous predator.

Belonging to the larger Plesiosauria family, which existed from 228–61.6 million years ago, Zarafasaura shares its lineage with Plesiosaurus. Fossil discoveries of 938 specimens reveal the diversity of these marine reptiles. Popular depictions often blend species and are influenced by Loch Ness Monster legends, but Zarafasaura’s fossils provide real insight into prehistoric ocean life and predator-prey dynamics.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be harsh. No fossil emerges fully intact; most require some restoration, and some are even modified to improve their appearance. Moroccan workers excel at carefully excavating and preserving these natural treasures, though surface cracks are often visible. These cracks are natural features and are not viewed as flaws.
