Edmontosaurus, meaning "lizard from Edmonton," was a hadrosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 71 to 65 million years ago. Adults typically measured up to nine meters in length, with larger specimens reaching thirteen meters and weighing around 3.5 tonnes, ranking it among the largest hadrosaurids. Its dentition comprised up to sixty tightly packed tooth rows, continuously replaced much like those of sharks, enabling efficient processing of tough vegetation. The upper jaw bones flexed outward during chewing to allow grinding with the lower jaw. Fossil evidence shows its diet included conifer needles, seeds, and twigs, indicating a browsing lifestyle. Notably, the 1908 Wyoming discovery preserved skin impressions revealing scaly, leathery texture and muscle placement that contributed to its duck-like appearance. Anatomically, Edmontosaurus was primarily bipedal but capable of quadrupedal movement, with forelimbs shorter than hindlimbs and hoofed front digits. Its vertebral column curved downward at the shoulders, positioning it low to the ground for feeding. Despite strong limbs, Edmontosaurus likely moved slowly and relied on acute sensory abilities for predator detection rather than physical defense.
