Cretaceous Age (66-145 million years ago)
Burmese Amber, also called Burmite or Kachin amber, originates from the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar. It is approximately 99 million years old, dating back to the early part of the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous. Amber is a resin derived from fossilized conifer tree sap, formed over many years under heat and pressure. This yellow to reddish-brown, translucent substance has been used for jewelry, in Egyptian burials, and in healing practices. It also plays a crucial role in scientific research. Amber often contains inclusions such as insects, whole or partial animals, and plants, which are trapped and preserved. Its ability to protect these ancient specimens has led to important discoveries, like feathers on a 145-million-year-old non-avian dinosaur and insights into gene clusters for new antibiotics.
