Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most recognizable fossils, easily identified by their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells (as shown above). These marine creatures thrived in the world’s oceans for nearly 175 million years, from about 240 to 65 million years ago, before becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs.
The name ammonite (commonly written in lowercase) is derived from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose spiraled horns resembled the coiled shells of these ancient animals. Ammonites belonged to a group of marine predators known as cephalopods, which includes their modern relatives—the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
