Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most recognizable fossils, noted for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells (as shown above). These marine animals thrived in the oceans from approximately 240 to 65 million years ago, before becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs. The term ammonite (commonly written in lowercase) derives from the Greek ram-horned deity Ammon, whose spiral horns resembled their shells. Ammonites belonged to a group of marine predators known as cephalopods, which includes their modern relatives—the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
