Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most recognizable fossils, noted for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells. These marine creatures inhabited the oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs. The name ammonite (typically written in lowercase) derives from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose horns resembled their coiled shells. Ammonites belonged to a group of marine predators called cephalopods, which also includes their modern relatives — the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
