Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most recognizable fossils, celebrated for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells. These fascinating marine creatures inhabited the oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, disappearing alongside the dinosaurs.
The name ammonite comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resembled their shells. Ammonites were cephalopods, belonging to the same group as modern octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses—all skilled hunters of the sea.
