Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most famous fossils, easily recognized by their beautiful ribbed, spiral shells. These marine creatures lived in the world’s oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, disappearing along with the dinosaurs. The name ammonite comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, as their shells resemble coiled horns. Ammonites belonged to a group of ocean predators called cephalopods—the same family that includes modern octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and the nautilus.
