Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites represent one of the most widely recognized and studied fossil groups, distinguished by their ribbed, planispirally coiled shells. They inhabited marine environments from approximately 240 to 65 million years ago, becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period during the same event that wiped out the dinosaurs. The term ammonite derives from the Greek deity Ammon, often depicted with ram’s horns resembling the shell’s coiled form. As members of the subclass Ammonoidea within the class Cephalopoda, ammonites are closely related to modern cephalopods such as octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and the nautilus.
