Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are some of the most famous fossils, easily recognized by their beautiful spiral shells marked with ribbed patterns. These ancient sea creatures lived in the world’s oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, disappearing at the same time as the dinosaurs. Their name comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resemble their shells. Ammonites were part of the cephalopod family—the same group that includes today’s octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
