Perisphinctes Ammonite

Ammonites are among the most recognized fossils, known for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells (as shown above). These marine animals inhabited the oceans from roughly 240 to 65 million years ago, becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs. The term ammonite (typically written in lowercase) originates from the Greek ram-horned deity Ammon, whose spiral horns resembled their shells. Ammonites belonged to a group of marine predators called cephalopods, which also includes their modern relatives—the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
