The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, also known as the Fossil Sea Urchin, is an extinct species from the Jurassic Period, approximately 145 to 200 million years ago. Belonging to the echinoid family, it is easily recognized by its distinctive five-ray star pattern on the shell. These fossils, often discovered in Madagascar, formed when the original sea urchin was buried in fine ocean sediments that gradually hardened into rock. Over time, the organic material decayed, leaving behind a beautifully preserved cast of the creature’s shape and surface texture.
Polished specimens reveal intricate details of the ancient sea floor and are highly prized by both collectors and paleontologists for their natural symmetry and historical significance. They serve as remarkable reminders of the diverse marine ecosystems that thrived millions of years ago.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
