Upper Cretaceous, 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres discovered a new pteranodontid species called Tethydraco Regalis in the Upper Cretaceous Couche III beds near Khouribga, Morocco. These fossils come from rocks formed during the last million years of the Mesozoic Era, marking some of the final pterosaur species before the K-Pg Extinction. Tethydraco is identified by an isolated humerus as its holotype, along with other limb bones like two ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. Its name means “royal Tethys dragon,” honoring the ancient Tethys Ocean that once separated northern Africa and Eurasia.
