Clypeaster altus Sea Urchins belong to a group of marine invertebrates that today inhabit nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator and from intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group possesses an extensive fossil record dating back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and assisted in locomotion.
