Tetragramma marticense sea urchins are marine invertebrates that have inhabited Earth’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Today, their relatives can be found in nearly every marine environment—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, sea urchins have a rich fossil record that extends back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period.
Commonly referred to as “sea biscuits,” their scientific group name, Echinoidea, comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that served both as protection from predators and as a means of locomotion along the seafloor.
