66-225 million years old Cretaceous and Quaternary periods
This is a decorated specimen polished to a nice sheen, with gorgeous interspersed colors resulting from the different minerals present when this was fossilized. In the late Tertiary period, blankets of forests covered areas around volcanoes throughout Madagascar. After volcanic eruptions, these trees were buried by ash and lava, eliminating any microbes that would cause the wood to decay. The wood was then replaced by silica-rich minerals such as chalcedony, quartz, calcite, opal, and jasper. The beautiful colors in the wood come from various trace elements. Traces of manganese create blue and black colors, while traces of iron produce different shades of brown and orange.
