Maiasaura was a large herbivorous duck-billed dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Period, around 65 to 70 million years ago. In 1978, a major nesting site was found in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau, Montana, U.S. It had a short, wide, toothless beak, with jaws packed with hundreds of teeth for chewing tough plants. Its low head featured a small bony crest between the eyes, and it had a long, pointed tail. Like other duck-billed dinosaurs, its hind legs were longer than its front limbs, allowing it to walk on two legs or all fours. It took about seven to eight years to reach adult size, growing up to eight meters long and weighing around four metric tons.
