Upper Cretaceous 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres described a new pteranodontid species named Tethydraco Regalis from the Upper Cretaceous Couche III deposits at the Sidi Daoui phosphate mines near Khouribga, Morocco. These sediments date to the final one million years of the Mesozoic Era, capturing some of the last pterosaurs before the K-Pg Extinction. Tethydraco is identified primarily by a solitary humerus serving as the holotype, along with several additional limb bones such as two ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. The name means “royal Tethys dragon,” referencing the ancient Tethys Ocean that once lay between northern Africa and Eurasia.
