Tetragramma marticense sea urchins are marine invertebrates that inhabit nearly every major ocean environment—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts a rich fossil record that dates back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period.
Commonly referred to as “sea biscuits,” their name comes from the Latin word echinus, meaning “pickle.” In life, these sea urchins were covered with movable spines that provided protection and helped them move along the seafloor.
