Tetragramma marticense sea urchins are marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly every major ocean habitat, ranging from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group has an extensive fossil record that dates back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “sea biscuits,” their scientific name Echinoidea comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided protection and helped them move across the sea floor.
