Tetragramma Marticense Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can now be found in almost every major marine habitat, from the poles to the equator and from the intertidal zone to depths of over 5,000 meters. There are approximately 800 living species, and the group has a rich fossil record dating back about 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly called "Sea Biscuits," these Sea Urchins' echinoid name is Latin for "pickle." When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided protection and aided in locomotion.
