Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found today in nearly every major marine habitat—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are around 800 living species, and the group has an extensive fossil record dating back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and mobility.
