Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are part of a group of marine invertebrates that today inhabit nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, this group boasts a rich and detailed fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these sea urchins were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and movement along the seafloor.
