Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins belong to a group of marine invertebrates that can be found today in nearly all major marine environments—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, this group possesses a rich and extensive fossil record that dates back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that offered protection and aided in locomotion across the sea floor.
