Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” was a massive extinct shark that lived approximately 23–5 million years ago, during the Miocene to Pliocene epochs. As one of the largest predators in history, it reached an estimated 15–18 meters long, nearly three times the size of the largest modern great white shark.

Its enormous, serrated teeth, some up to 18 centimeters, were perfectly adapted for gripping, crushing, and slicing whales, large fish, and marine mammals. Fossilized teeth reveal insights into Megalodon’s diet, hunting strategies, and predatory dominance, offering a glimpse into the life of this apex predator.

Megalodon thrived in warm coastal waters, continental shelves, and open oceans, with fossils found on every continent, highlighting its near-global distribution. Its size, power, and speed allowed it to ambush prey efficiently, shaping marine ecosystems and maintaining balance in the oceans for over 13 million years.

Today, Megalodon fossils—especially teeth—are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists. Each specimen provides a direct connection to prehistoric oceans, showcasing the scale, strength, and hunting prowess of one of the most iconic sharks to ever exist. Whether for display, study, or collection, Megalodon remains a symbol of prehistoric marine power and evolutionary achievement.
