Tetragramma marticense Sea Urchin is an extinct species of sea urchin belonging to the echinoid group of marine invertebrates. Echinoids have a long evolutionary history, with a fossil record dating back about 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Modern relatives of these fascinating creatures—sea urchins and sand dollars—still inhabit oceans across the world, from polar regions to tropical reefs and from shallow tidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters.
Commonly called “Sea Biscuits,” these echinoids derive their name from their rounded, biscuit-like shell, or test. When alive, Tetragramma marticense was covered with movable spines that served both as protection and as a means of locomotion across the seafloor. Their wide distribution and well-preserved fossils offer valuable insight into ancient marine ecosystems and the long evolutionary history of sea urchins.
