Fulgurite is a natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or dunes, causing the intense heat to fuse sand grains into unique tubular or branching formations. Also referred to as petrified or fossilized lightning, fulgurite is primarily composed of silica, the main component of sand. The Sahara Desert in Algeria offers ideal conditions for these structures to develop, thanks to its extensive sandy landscape and frequent thunderstorms. Lightning temperatures can reach up to 30,000°C (54,000°F), rapidly melting and solidifying the sand while preserving the original shape and texture of the grains in the resulting fulgurite.
