66-150 million years old Cretaceous and Quaternary periods
This specimen is a polished decorator piece with a smooth sheen and vibrant interspersed colors caused by various minerals present during fossilization. During the late Tertiary period, forests blanketed the areas surrounding volcanoes across America. Volcanic eruptions buried these trees with ash and lava, destroying any microbes that could cause decay. Over time, the wood was replaced by silica-rich minerals such as chalcedony, quartz, calcite, opal, and jasper. The striking colors in the wood are due to different trace elements; for example, manganese traces produce blue and black hues, while iron traces lead to various shades of brown and orange.
