145 million years old Upper Jurassic Age
Pyrolusite Dendritic Limestone
The renowned Solnhofen limestone stands out as a vital fossil site due to its remarkable variety of exceptionally preserved organisms. Buried 150 million years ago in soft lagoonal sediments, it offers a rare insight into Jurassic marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Fossils include complete skeletons and soft-bodied animals that rarely endure fossilization, such as jellyfish, crustaceans, squid, fish, and flying reptiles. Notably, the Archaeopteryx—a key evolutionary specimen blending dinosaur and bird features—illustrates the transition between reptiles and birds. Although some specimens were cracked during excavation, professional restoration preserves their scientific and aesthetic value, reflecting the characteristic splitting of Solnhofen limestone.
