145 million years old Upper Jurassic Age
Pyrolusite Dendritic Limestone
The Solnhofen limestone is a critically important fossil site known for its remarkable variety of well-preserved organisms. Deposited about 150 million years ago in soft lagoonal muds, it offers valuable insight into the diverse marine and terrestrial life of the Jurassic period. The fossils include articulated skeletons and soft-bodied animals, typically too fragile to survive fossilization. Among the notable finds are jellyfish, crustaceans, squid, fish, and flying reptiles. Most famously, the Archaeopteryx—a key transitional species combining dinosaur anatomy with feathers—illustrates an important evolutionary link between reptiles and birds. Although many specimens were cracked during excavation, skilled restoration has preserved their scientific and aesthetic value. Fossils are commonly discovered by splitting the limestone layers.
