145 million years old Upper Jurassic Age
Pyrolusite Dendritic Limestone
The Solnhofen limestone is a pivotal fossil site renowned for its remarkable diversity and exceptional preservation of Jurassic organisms. Deposited approximately 150 million years ago in fine lagoonal sediments, it offers an unparalleled record of both marine and terrestrial life. This formation preserves not only articulated skeletons but also delicate soft-bodied species rarely fossilized, such as jellyfish, crustaceans, squid, fish, and flying reptiles. Of particular significance is Archaeopteryx, the iconic transitional fossil displaying dinosaur skeletal features alongside feathers, illuminating the evolutionary link between reptiles and birds. Although many specimens suffered cracking during excavation, skilled restoration has preserved their scientific and aesthetic value. The majority of fossils are revealed by carefully splitting the limestone layers.
