145 million years old Upper Jurassic Age
Pyrolusite Dendritic Limestone
The celebrated Solnhofen limestone is one of the world’s most important fossil deposits, renowned for its astonishing diversity and exceptional preservation. Buried in soft lagoonal muds some 150 million years ago, both marine and terrestrial creatures, as well as plants, provide a rare glimpse into the richness of Jurassic life. Articulated skeletons are preserved alongside delicate soft-bodied animals that would rarely survive fossilization.
Highlights include beautifully preserved jellyfish, crustaceans, squid, fish, and flying reptiles. Perhaps the most significant find is Archaeopteryx, the iconic “missing link” with a dinosaur skeleton covered in feathers, revealing a key evolutionary transition between reptiles and birds.
While some specimens were cracked during excavation, all have been expertly repaired and restored, maintaining their remarkable detail and beauty. Most fossils are revealed when the limestone layers are carefully split, offering a window into a long-vanished world teeming with life.
