Fulgurite is a rare natural glass formed by the intense strike of lightning onto sandy ground or dunes, capturing a moment of nature’s power. The extreme heat from the bolt fuses sand grains into striking tubes or branching forms. Often called petrified or fossilized lightning, fulgurite embodies the raw force of a lightning strike frozen in time.
The Sahara Desert in Morocco is a notable location for the occurrence of fulgurites. Its extensive sandy landscapes, coupled with regular thunderstorms, create the perfect setting for these remarkable geological formations to develop. Fulgurites vary in size, from slender, delicate tubes to elaborate, branching structures of considerable complexity.
Fulgurites are composed mainly of silica, which is the primary component of sand. When lightning strikes the ground, temperatures can reach up to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit), causing the sand to melt and fuse rapidly. The resulting fulgurite structures preserve the shape and texture of the surrounding sand grains.
