Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that inhabit nearly every major marine environment today—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts a rich fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these sea urchins were covered with movable spines that offered protection and aided in movement along the ocean floor.
