Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly every major marine habitat today—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group has an extensive fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided protection and assisted in locomotion along the seafloor.
