100 million years old, Cretaceous Age.

This exceptionally preserved fossil Shrimp (Carpopenaeus) is embedded within its original limestone matrix and dates back approximately 100 million years to the Cretaceous Period. The fossil beds that produced this specimen were first mentioned by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, who poetically described them as “fish in the stones.”

Unlike many lesser-quality examples from this region, this specimen shows no color enhancement or restoration, preserving its natural appearance. The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon are world-renowned for their remarkable diversity of marine fauna and are often compared to the famous Solnhofen limestones of Germany. Both formations share the unique characteristic of fossils being nearly the same color as the surrounding stone.

Specifically, the fossil-bearing layers of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel in Lebanon date to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, around 100 million years ago. While these deposits are best known for their exquisitely preserved fish, they also yield an impressive array of other invertebrates, including shrimp and lobsters, making them among the most important fossil sites of their kind.
