100 million years old, Cretaceous Age.

This beautifully preserved fossil Shrimp (Carpopenaeus) is embedded in its original limestone matrix and dates to the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100 million years ago. The fossil beds from which it was recovered were first mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus, who referred to them as “fish in the stones.”

Unlike many lower-quality specimens from this region, this shrimp shows no color enhancement or restoration, maintaining its authentic natural appearance. The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon are celebrated for their exceptional diversity of fossilized marine life and are often compared to the famous Solnhofen limestone of Germany. Both are noted for the unique characteristic of fossils appearing in the same coloration as the surrounding matrix.

The fossil-rich layers of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel in Lebanon date to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, about 100 million years ago. While these sites are best known for their exquisitely preserved fish fossils, they also produce an impressive range of other invertebrate fossils, including shrimp and lobsters, making them among the world’s most remarkable Cretaceous fossil localities.
