Septarian Dragon Stone:

Septarian, also known as Dragon Stone, is a unique and fascinating rock formation found in only a few locations around the world. In the United States, notable deposits occur near Zion National Park in Southern Utah, while other significant sources include Mahajanga in Madagascar and Morocco.

Septarian nodules were formed during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 50–70 million years ago, on ancient seafloors. Over time, sediments and minerals combined to create these striking stones. As erosion exposed them, early specimens could be collected directly from the surface, but today, they are typically excavated from depths of 20–30 feet using heavy machinery.

Each septarian nodule is distinctive in both color and pattern, featuring a natural mosaic of contrasting materials:

  • Yellow centers: Calcite

  • Brown lines: Aragonite

  • Gray rock: Bentonite

  • White or clear areas: Barite

The stone’s alternate name, Dragon Stone, originates from an old Malagasy legend, which likened its cracked, fiery appearance to the skin of a dragon.
