Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral with a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale. Found on every continent, it occurs in a wide range of colors and forms, from massive deposits to well-formed crystals. It is a major component of marble and limestone. Yellow calcite, often found in massive form rather than as distinct crystals, is prized from specimens sourced in Mexico.

The name calcite comes from the Greek word “chalix”, meaning lime. This versatile mineral appears in colors including red, green, orange, yellow, blue, pink, clear, black, and white. Calcite forms in numerous geological environments and occasionally fluoresces blue or red under UV light.
