Goniatite Ammonite

Ammonoids were marine cephalopods that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods. Their name comes from their "ram's horn"-shaped shells, inspired by the Egyptian god Amun, who is shown with ram’s horns. Though they resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are likely octopi, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells feature chambers separated by septa, whose attachment forms distinctive suture patterns used for identification. The early Goniatites display a "Goniatitic" zigzag pattern of smooth lobes and saddles, while later Ammonites exhibit more complex fern-like sutures. This fossil captures that fascinating evolutionary detail.
