Corythosaurus is a genus of hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 80 to 74 million years ago, within the Campanian age of the Mesozoic Era. Like other hadrosaurs, Corythosaurus possessed hundreds of small, interlocking teeth located deep in the jaws, forming grinding surfaces ideal for crushing tough plant material.
One of its most distinctive features was the large bony crest on top of its head, which housed part of the nasal passage. Scientists believe this crest may have functioned as a resonating chamber used for communication, producing low-frequency sounds, as well as serving roles in display and species recognition.
Corythosaurus had a long, heavy tail and walked primarily on four legs but could also move on two when needed. Adults likely weighed between three and five tons. The first Corythosaurus fossils were discovered in the Judith River Formation, an extensive geological deposit that stretches from Alberta, Canada, to Montana, USA. The species was formally described in 1914.
