Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

This is a real fossil.

The name Megalodon, which means “big tooth,” refers to an extinct shark species that existed around 23 to 5 million years ago, from the Early Miocene through the end of the Pliocene. It was once classified within the Lamnidae family, indicating a close relation to the great white shark. As one of the largest predators in Earth's history, the Megalodon continues to intrigue many. Questions remain whether this formidable creature was simply a larger version of the great white shark and whether it might still inhabit the mysterious depths of our oceans.

The oldest megalodon fossils (Otodus megalodon, formerly called Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back 20 million years. For 13 million years, this massive shark ruled the seas before going extinct just 2.6 million years ago. Otodus megalodon wasn’t only the largest shark but one of the biggest fish ever to swim the oceans, estimated to reach lengths between 15 and 18 meters—three times the size of the largest known great white shark. Since no complete skeleton exists, these estimates rely on its teeth, which can grow up to 18 centimeters long. The name megalodon means ‘large tooth,’ and these impressive fossils reveal fascinating insights into the diet and power of this extraordinary predator—making this rare find a must-have for any serious collector.
