Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

This is a real fossil.

Megalodon, which means “big tooth,” is an extinct shark species that lived between approximately 23 and 5 million years ago, spanning from the Early Miocene to the end of the Pliocene. It was once believed to be part of the Lamnidae family, closely related to the great white shark. As one of the largest predators in history, Megalodon has fascinated many. Questions remain about whether it was simply an enlarged version of the great white shark and if it might still exist in the deep, unexplored parts of the ocean.

The earliest known megalodon fossils (Otodus megalodon, formerly classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back approximately 20 million years. This formidable shark ruled the oceans for the subsequent 13 million years before its extinction around 2.6 million years ago. Otodus megalodon was not only the largest shark ever recorded but also among the biggest fish in history, with estimated lengths ranging from 15 to 18 meters—three times the size of the largest great white shark documented. These size estimations derive from the dimensions of its teeth, which can reach up to 18 centimeters. The term “megalodon” translates to “large tooth,” aptly reflecting the significance of these fossils in understanding the creature’s scale and feeding habits.
