Basilosaurus is a prehistoric whale that lived approximately 40 million to 34 million years ago during the Late Eocene Period. It was first discovered in the 19th century in the United States and was originally thought to be some kind of prehistoric reptile. This is why it was given the name Basilosaurus in 1834, which means “king lizard.”
Looking at the Basilosaurus, it’s clear that this whale was truly massive. It measured approximately 70 feet long and weighed around 15 tons—longer than a semi-trailer and nearly as heavy as a modern cruise ship’s anchor.
Basilosaurus was a carnivore, as shown by its sharp teeth and strong jaws. Scientists studying its fossils have determined that it had an enormous bite force, capable of exerting about 2,300 pounds of pressure.
Why such a powerful bite? It was essential for hunting and killing its preferred prey. Paleontologists believe Basilosaurus likely fed on large fish, smaller whales, and nearly anything else it could catch, making it one of the top predators of its ancient oceans.
