Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

This is a real fossil.

The Megalodon, which translates to “big tooth,” was a colossal shark that ruled the seas from about 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene to the late Pliocene. Once believed to be related to the great white shark as part of the Lamnidae family, this apex predator was one of the largest hunters ever to exist. It sparks awe and mystery — was it just a super-sized great white, or could this giant still be lurking in the ocean’s darkest depths, waiting to be discovered?

The earliest fossils of Megalodon (Otodus megalodon, once called Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) are dated around 20 million years ago. For 13 million years, this colossal shark ruled the oceans before going extinct only 2.6 million years ago. O. megalodon wasn’t just the largest shark ever—it was among the biggest fish to have lived. Scientists estimate it measured between 15 and 18 meters, three times the size of the biggest great white shark recorded. While no full skeleton exists, the size of its teeth—up to 18 centimeters long—offers powerful evidence of its immense scale and predatory power. The name “megalodon” means “large tooth,” and these remarkable fossils reveal incredible insights into the life of this prehistoric giant. Owning a piece of this history connects you directly to one of the ocean’s most formidable creatures.
